Choose the output before you upload
The maker takes one original image and produces either a single 600 x 600 JPEG or a 1200 x 1800 JPEG containing six copies. The single image is a square file; the sheet is a print layout. Both contain 300 PPI metadata, but a print service can still change the finished size if it applies scaling or automatic cropping.
For a paper application, start with the receiving authority's printed-photo instructions. For an online form, check its pixel dimensions, file format and size limit instead. A square file is not automatically suitable for every passport or visa process.
From original photo to finished file
- Keep the original. Choose a clear image with room around the head and shoulders. Do not start from a screenshot or a previously compressed copy when a larger original is available.
- Frame the square. Drag the image and adjust zoom. The frame is fixed at a 1:1 ratio, so the tool crops the rectangle rather than stretching it.
- Read the local checks. A resolution warning means the selected crop has fewer than 600 source pixels across. Brightness and sharpness messages are rough checks, not proof of document compliance.
- Choose a download. Use the single JPEG for a workflow that requests that file. Use the sheet with the printing guide when you need physical copies.
What the three modes change
| Mode | What changes | What it does not do |
|---|---|---|
| General 2x2 | Square cropping and normal JPEG export. | It does not verify a particular document's rules. |
| U.S. passport | Displays a manual framing guide and a reminder to check official instructions. | It does not certify head size, replace a background or guarantee acceptance. |
| U.S. visa | Compresses the single 600 x 600 JPEG to the tool's 240 KB limit. | It does not submit an application or check every visa requirement. |
A worked size example
Imagine a 1200 x 1800 portrait image. At 100% zoom, the centered square uses a 1200 x 1200 region and reduces that region to 600 x 600 pixels. You can reposition the crop before export. If important details fall outside the square, use an original with more room rather than trying to reconstruct the missing background.
The print-sheet download repeats the resulting square in two columns and three rows. Six copies on one sheet are not six different photos; the same selected crop appears in every cell.
Before you use the result
Open the downloaded file and check framing at a comfortable size. The browser checks cannot confirm identity, image age, expression, background compliance or official acceptance. For printing, select 4 x 6 inches with scaling and auto-crop disabled, then measure a finished copy if exact physical size matters.
For more control over framing, use the cropper guide. For format issues, read the conversion guide. Processing happens locally; general page and tool events may still be recorded as explained in the privacy policy.
Use the receiving authority as the final source
This is an independent preparation tool, not a government service. Check the exact document and submission method before using a downloaded photo. A correct file size does not guarantee that its subject or composition will be accepted.
