Convert by cropping, not stretching

A rectangular image cannot become a square while keeping every edge and preserving all proportions. This converter selects a square region, then resamples that region to 600 x 600 pixels. The head is not squeezed or widened to fit the output.

For example, a 1200 x 800 landscape source contains an 800 x 800 centered square. At 100% zoom, 200 pixels from each side fall outside the crop. The square is then reduced to 600 x 600. Move the crop if the important part of the image is not centered.

Synthetic rectangle with a round circle: square cropping preserves the circle while stretching turns it into an oval.

What happens to each input format

OriginalConversion behaviorCheck before downloading
JPEGDecoded, cropped and encoded as a new JPEG.Use the original rather than repeatedly saving a compressed copy.
PNGThe square is exported as JPEG, which does not keep transparency.Transparent areas are drawn over white. That is not background removal.
WebPA browser-decodable image becomes a single JPEG.Review detail after conversion and keep the original file.
HEIC / HEIFWorks only when the browser can decode that file.If reading fails, export a JPEG copy in your device's photo app first.

Pixels and print metadata are different

The JPEG always contains 600 x 600 pixels. Its 300 PPI metadata describes a suggested 2 x 2 inch print size because 600 divided by 300 is 2. Changing metadata alone would not add image detail; this tool actually crops and resizes the pixel content.

The pixel size guide explains this distinction. A digital upload form may ignore print metadata entirely and check only dimensions, encoding and file size.

Why a converted photo can still look blurry

A file can have the right output dimensions while containing too little original detail. At 200% zoom, that 800-pixel square source region becomes roughly 400 pixels across. Enlarging it to 600 pixels cannot recover detail that was not there.

Reduce zoom or return to a larger original when the source-resolution warning appears. If the original is already blurred, the converter does not sharpen faces or invent missing detail. See the local checker for the limits of its quality estimates.

Choose the correct file for your destination

General and passport modes use the normal JPEG export. Visa mode applies a 240 KB size limit to the single JPEG and may reduce encoding quality to meet it. A different form may use different rules, so check that form rather than assuming the visa limit applies to every online passport workflow.

The tool does not rotate the source, replace backgrounds, retouch faces or submit applications. Correct rotation in your device's photo app before uploading, and keep the full-resolution original alongside the converted file.

Review the converted image, not just its dimensions

Confirm that the required part of the photo remains inside the square and that facial detail is clear. For physical copies, continue with the printing guide. The receiving authority decides whether a document photo is acceptable.
